Tour Information

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha / Moshi

Transfer from Kilimanjaro airport to your accommodation in Moshi or Arusha.

Day 2: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Take a short drive from Arusha town or Moshi to the Kilimanjaro Park Gate (1,830 m.) lies at the edge of Marangu, which is an attractive village with many small coffee and banana plantations. After completing the entrance formalities, we climb up through attractive and unspoiled forest to reach the clearing containing Mandara Hut (2,700 m.). The volcanic remains of Maundi Crater are nearby, and make a good afternoon excursion. An alternative is to rest and enjoy the beautiful forest. There is a rich birdlife at the huts and monkeys are often seen as well.
  • 5,500 ft / 1,700 m to 9,000 ft / 2,740 m
  • 7 km
  • 4-5 hours
  • Montane Forest

Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

The first part of the walk is a steep ascent through forest, but the path soon opens out into grassy moorland and, in clear weather, there are good views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. We climb steadily through the moorland zone, containing giant heather and occasional stands of groundsel, to eventually reach Horombo Hut (3,720 m.). Sunrises and sunsets here are often very stunning, the site is close to the glaciated dome of Kibo, and there is a real sense of being above the clouds.
  • 9,000 ft / 2,700 m to 12,100 ft / 3,700 m
  • 11 km
  • 6-8 hours
  • Heathland

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

We climb very gradually towards the lunar desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain changes to screed and there is a palpable sense of high altitude wilderness. We usually reach Kibo Hut (4,700 m.) at the bottom of the crater wall by midday and the afternoon is free (to contemplate the summit ascent!!). The remainder of the day is spent resting and eating in preparation for the final climb before a very early night! [4-5 hours walking from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut]
  • 12,100 ft / 3,700 m to 15,400 ft / 4,700 m
  • 10 km
  • 6-8 hours
  • Alpine Desert

Day 5: Summit Day then down to Horombo Hut

We will start our ascent by torchlight at about 1 a.m. so that we can be up at Gillman’s Point by sunrise. The initial climb is steep over loose volcanic screen, but there are some well-graded zigzag and a slow but steady pace will have us up to Gillman’s (5,685 m.) in about five or six hours. We will rest there and spend some time taking in the sunrise. Those who are still feeling strong can make the three hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m.) passing close to the spectacular glaciers that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent is surprisingly fast and we return to Horombo Hut for the night.
  • 15,400 ft / 4,700 m to 19,300 ft / 5,895 m
  • 19,300 ft / 5,895 m to 12,100 ft / 3,700 m
  • 4 km up / 14 km down
  • 10-15 hours
  • Alpine Desert

Day 6: Horombo Hut – Arusha / Moshi

After breakfast,we will start with a pleasant moorland walk to Mandara and then a lovely forest walk to the National Park gates to Arusha town. The greenness and lushness of the forest is quite a stunning contrast to the summit day, and it really makes you realize how varied the scenery on Kilimanjaro really is. A vehicle will meet you at Marangu village to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Don’t forget to tip your guides and porters. It is time for celebration!
  • 12,100 ft / 3,700 m to 5,500 ft / 1,700 m
  • 18km
  • 5-7 hours

Day 7: Arusha / Moshi

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight home or for an extension, such as a Northern Circuit Safari or an onward flight to Zanzibar.

Embark on an extension journey of a lifetime! Imagine the thrill of a breathtaking safari, the serene bliss of Zanzibar’s turquoise waters, or uncovering hidden gems in Moshi and Arusha. At Oxygen Adventures & Wellness, we offer high-quality “like new” rental gear that will serve you exceptionally well during your climb. Renting this gear instead of purchasing it can be a cost-effective option, as these items are often expensive on the retail market. Opting to rent will also reduce the bulk of your airline baggage, as items like sleeping bags, pads, and jackets tend to be some of the most cumbersome things to bring along for your Kilimanjaro adventure.

To reserve your rental gear, simply fill out our Rental Gear Request Form. Payment for the rental equipment will be collected in cash (USD) during the trip briefing, with bills from 2004 or newer. Please note that rental costs are not included in your booking form, and we do not accept credit cards—cash only. Rental gear is exclusively available to our clients.

For your convenience, the weight of the rental sleeping pad and trekking poles is not counted toward your porter weight limit if rented from us. However, the weight of the jacket and sleeping bag will be included in the porter weight limit calculation.

If you have requested ALTOX, please be aware that you can cancel it up to 30 days before your climb. Within 30 days of your climb, the full $350 fee will be charged at the trip briefing.

Dietary Plans for Travelers in Tanzania: Non-Vegans and Vegans

Tanzania, a land of natural wonders and cultural diversity, offers unique culinary experiences for travelers. Whether you’re a non-vegan or a vegan, you can enjoy a fulfilling dietary plan that complements your journey. Here’s how Oxygen Adventure & Wellness plan your meals while exploring this East African gem:

For Non-Vegans

Tanzania boasts a variety of meat, seafood, and dairy options that cater to non-vegan diets.

For Vegans

Tanzania’s plant-based offerings are equally abundant and nutritious.

Tips for All Travelers

  • Stay Hydrated: Always carry bottled water and try Tanzania’s refreshing coconut water.
  • Communicate Dietary Needs: Learn basic Swahili phrases like “Mimi ni mboga” (I am vegetarian) or “Sili nyama” (I don’t eat meat).
  • Research Restaurants: Larger cities like Dar es Salaam and Arusha have vegan-friendly and international restaurants.

With proper planning, your dietary needs can be seamlessly integrated into your Tanzanian adventure. Whether you’re enjoying local flavors or sticking to a special diet, the country’s culinary diversity ensures you won’t miss out!

Tanzania’s diverse geography influences its weather patterns, which are essential to consider when planning a climb up Mount Kilimanjaro. The mountain, standing at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), features distinct climatic zones that correspond to different stages of the climb. Here’s an overview:

Tanzania’s General Weather Overview

  • Tropical Climate: Tanzania experiences a tropical climate with varying temperatures depending on altitude and proximity to the coast or inland areas.
  • Rainy Seasons:
    • Long Rains: March to May, characterized by heavy, consistent rainfall.
    • Short Rains: November to December, with lighter, less predictable rain.
  • Dry Seasons:
    • June to October: Cool and dry, ideal for outdoor adventures.
    • January to February: Warm and dry, a popular time for travelers.

Mount Kilimanjaro’s Climatic Zones

Kilimanjaro’s weather changes dramatically as you ascend through its five climatic zones:

  1. Cultivation Zone (800–1,800 m / 2,600–6,000 ft):

    • Warm and humid, with temperatures ranging from 20–25°C (68–77°F).
    • Surrounding villages and farmlands thrive in this zone.
  2. Rainforest Zone (1,800–2,800 m / 6,000–9,200 ft):

    • Lush, green, and often misty, with frequent rain.
    • Temperatures are around 15–20°C (59–68°F).
  3. Heather and Moorland Zone (2,800–4,000 m / 9,200–13,100 ft):

    • Cooler and drier, with temperatures dropping to 5–15°C (41–59°F).
    • Shrubs and giant lobelias dominate this zone.
  4. Alpine Desert Zone (4,000–5,000 m / 13,100–16,400 ft):

    • Harsh and dry, with daytime temperatures of 0–10°C (32–50°F) and freezing nights.
    • Little vegetation survives here.
  5. Arctic Zone (above 5,000 m / 16,400 ft):

    • Bitterly cold and windy, with temperatures ranging from -20°C to -5°C (-4°F to 23°F).
    • Glaciers and snowfields create a stark, icy environment.

Preparation Tips for Climbers

  • Layering is Key: Pack moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and waterproof outer layers to adapt to varying temperatures.
  • Hydration: The dry alpine desert can cause dehydration despite the cold.
  • Acclimatization: Prepare for altitude sickness by choosing routes with gradual ascents, like the Lemosho or Machame routes.

Understanding the weather is vital for a safe and enjoyable Kilimanjaro climb. Proper preparation ensures that you’re ready to tackle the mountain’s diverse and challenging conditions.

1. What is the best time of year to climb Mount Kilimanjaro?

The dry seasons, from June to October and January to February, offer the best conditions with clear skies and manageable trails.

No technical skills are required. Kilimanjaro is a non-technical trek, but good physical fitness and mental endurance are necessary.

Most climbs take 5–9 days, depending on the route chosen and acclimatization needs. Longer itineraries increase summit success rates.

Success rates vary by route and duration. Treks lasting 7+ days have a 75–90% success rate, while shorter treks have lower success rates.

Altitude sickness is common but manageable. Prevent it by ascending slowly, staying hydrated, and choosing longer routes for better acclimatization.
