Mount OLDONYO LENGAI treks
Ol Doinyo Lengai, located 240 km northwest of Arusha, Tanzania, and bordering Kenya, stands at 2,890 meters along the Great Rift Valley’s western edge, near Lake Natron. Known as the “Mountain of God” in Maasai, it’s Tanzania’s only active volcano. Climbers can reach the summit in 6 hours, starting at dawn, to enjoy stunning views of the Rift Valley and Ngorongoro’s volcanic landscape. However, it’s closed during eruptions due to its active nature.
Lake Natron, at the volcano’s base, is crucial for the endangered Lesser Flamingoes, hosting 75% of their global population. This soda lake, the lowest point in the East African Rift, is shallow and highly alkaline, protecting flamingo nests from predators with temperatures in the mud exceeding 40°C. The area’s stark beauty, reminiscent of a lunar landscape, and the adventure walks around the lake and nearby waterfalls, offer unique experiences off the common path.
